about-products

Our Lacquer and Bamboo products will enhance any home with their unique sense of style. Lacquer Ware products, such as vases, are capable of holding water and are perfect for displaying cut flowers. For Bamboo items we recommend not filling them with water. These vases are better suited to displaying dried flowers.

All of our products are hand crafted by highly skilled crafts men and women from different districts in Vietnam.  Each district has it's own special skill with the skills being passed down from one generation to another.

Vietnam has the reputation of producing some of the most talented designers and crafts people in South East Asia.  Their work is highly valued in countries such as Japan and Korea. In the past they have perhaps not been so well known in Europe, but their reputation is now spreading as people discover for the first time these truly amazing home furnishings.

The process of production requires many stages and many hours of work.  For Lacquer Ware items the main materials include a special Vietnamese lacquer sap of sumac Rhus Vernicifera, a type of tree growing in the northwestern area of the country. Additionally, they use a flour of minerals such as gold, silver, bronze, egg – shell and alluvial soil. Lacquer ware production basically has the following stages:

1. Making the mould:

Firstly, the craftsman makes a mould for the product. The mould can be made from wood or bamboo with predetermined dimensions & shapes. These materials are processed before being used. They have to be durable & resistant to any weather conditions.

2. Creating the lacquer stature:

Secondly, the completed mould is covered by many layers of canvas. They then apply several layers of sap mixed with other components such as alluvial soil & sawdust. After applying each layer, normally 3 - 4 times, the craftsmen carefully dry & sandpaper each item.  After drying, this layer is very hard. For the next step, the craftsman continues their work with the painting and when dry, brushing to form a perfect surface.

3. Painting the lacquer pattern:

The patterns, which can be inlayed with egg-shell, are then painted on the surface of the product using traditional methods, which integrally maintains colour & detail. All backgrounds & pictures can be reproduced with accuracy. Then, the product is covered by another layer of sap, dried and polished to make these patterns prominent. The lacquer painting is repeated 2 – 3 times.

4. Polishing the lacquer surface:

The final stage is glazing. Each item is polished & packed after a final correction. Then a thin gold layer is laminated in predetermined positions of the product surface. One of the special techniques used in the process of the lacquer wares' production is "making dry by dampness", the products are made dry in a filled steam chamber. One unique feature that makes the traditional lacquer products differ from others is that the images are painted into the lacquer's surface.

Many oriental vases, lacquerware, asian bowls, oriental handmade handbags and other items available in the UK are imitations of the real thing and cheaply mass produced, meaning that the quality and workmanship is poor. Handmade In Vietnam sell only authentic items which are imported directly from local craftspeople who hand make each item in Vietnam, ensuring that every article is of the highest quality.

How Lacquerware is made

All of our lacquerware, whether it be vases, asian bowls, lacquer boxes or any other beautiful items in our lacquerware range, is handmade in a similar traditional way, crafted with generations of knowledge and skill by local craftspeople in Vietnam.

Firstly a mould is made for the lacquerware product. This lacquerware mould can be made from bamboo or wood and the shape and size depends on the individual lacquerware items being made, whether it be lacquer boxes, oriental vases or asian bowls. The lacquerware mould needs to be treated to ensure it is waterproof and able to withstand the elements and is then covered in many layers of canvas.

The next stage of creating the lacquerware is applying layers of sap mixed with other natural products such as soil and sawdust to create unique and authentic lacquer boxes, vases and asian bowls. The lacquerware item is dried and sanded down after each layer is applied to create that authentic texture found on all lacquerware. After 3-4 layers, the lacquer boxes, vases and bowls have become incredibly hard and durable and the lacquerware is brushed to reveal a smooth surface.

Once the lacquerware reaches this stage, the lacquer boxes, bowls or vases are hand painted with their own unique design using traditional methods and covered with another layer of the sap mixture. This painting and fixing process is carried out several times to seal the patterns into the lacquerware and create those durable lacquer boxes and other beautiful items. The final stage is the glazing of the lacquerware, the adding of gold detailing and the vases, bowls and lacquer boxes then being polished and packed ready for shipment.

Whether you choose lacquer boxes, oriental vases, asian bowls, handmade handbags or a combination of all of them, we are sure that you will love the lacquerware products in our range.
